This beautiful modern architecture work was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and was inaugurated in July 1996. The City of Arts and Sciences is an impressive complex that has become in a tourist international reference place and is a symbol of the Valencian community investment to become their city in one of the principal tourist attractions in Spain.

The building was constructed around an axis of approximately 2 km in the antique riverbed Turia it is made of five public areas which are open to the public and they share their vocation to divulge the culture and encourage to their visitors to be part of its futuristic architectonic environment.

Besides, it is surrounded by attractive swimming pools and places where visitors can relax and take a walk either in the daytime or by night.

The city of Arts and Science is constituted by the following complexes:
  • L'Hemisfèric: IMAX Movie Theater and Planetarium
  • El Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe: Museum of applied science
  • L'Umbracle: A garden for walking
  • L'Oceanogràfic: Marine Park.
  • El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía: Room destined to opera and the performing arts

It was the first element in this complex in opening its doors to the public in April 1998. Its surface is about 4000 m²; it is surrounded by water and represents a big human eye that opens to heaven that is called "The eye of knowledge". Inside this complex is the IMAX, a movie theater, is the unique place in Spain that has a concave 900- square meters visual display screen where distinct projections come true.

It has five plants and more than 40.000 m2 surface, this museum is spectacular inside as well as outside its installations; It was made by a complicated set of platforms and is protected with two big covers that rise 40 meters over. It is conceived as a didactic and dynamic space, in which their visitors are be able to experience by their own senses. Most of its open spaces are dedicated to temporary expositions and the celebration of big cultural and scientists events.

It constitutes the entrance to the city of arts and sciences, it is a free access greenbelt that has about 7.000 square meters, 320 length and 60 meters meters width. It is made of a succession of 55 fixed arcs and 54 floating arcs of 18 meters height, around them grow creeper plants. It homes several sculptures inside, it is an outdoors art gallery which has sculptures of contemporary authors such as Miquel Navarro or Yoko Ono. Besides, it homes all kinds of different plants which have been selected considering their form and color and they vary along the year's seasons.

It is the biggest aquarium in Europe; it invites us to travel to the main seas and oceans of the planet. It has a volume of 42 million liters of salt water equivalent to 15 Olympic swimming pools, 110.000 square meters surface and a capability to home over 45.000 specimens of 500 different species such as sharks, walruses, sealions, penguins , etc. which populate the nine submarine towers structured in two levels. This complex represents the most emblematic ecosystems of the planet, from the Atlantic, Mediterranean, continental water, to the arctic's frozen seas or the Antarctic, through the warm or tropical habitats. It stands out for his educational projects as well as the conservation and investigation of the maritime sciences.

It is unique around the world because of its dimensions and design, and mainly for the important biological collection that exhibits, L´Oceanografic permits us to know closely the behavior of several animals such as dolphins, sealions, seals, sharks and other species; It is a place that promotes the passion for the marine world and the need of preserve it.

El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía was the last building of being opened to the public. It was inaugurated in the year 2005 and constitutes most expensive of the entire complex because it last about nine years to be finished. Its surface is 40.000 square meters approximately and has 75 meters height. This avant-garde space is considered as a "Coliseum of the XXI century" and provides to the Valencian city the best infrastructure in order to introduce it to international circuits, especially opera concerts and another big musical and theatrical shows.
